Bound by Fate by Annabel Chase:

4 stars

Maya August prefers to keep her head down and mind her own business — a practical survival strategy for a member of security on an island full of magical rulebreakers. But when a friend/coworker disappears, keeping herself to herself is no longer an option. As threats pile up and unwanted allies enter the picture, Maya discovers she has more connections on Evermore Island than she realized.

Annabel Chase delivers a fantastic start to a new series in Bound by Fate: a strong heroine with a mysterious past, a magical retirement haven packed with quirky personalities, and multiple romantic possibilities. One contender definitely seems to be pulling ahead, but I’m not committing to my preferred pairing just yet. Zachariah may be self-centered and abrasive, but I wouldn’t mind seeing him fall spectacularly head over heels.

The rebellious seniors who populate the island — Meemaw and her witches, anxious newcomers, underhanded handymen, flirtatious doctors, and the missing Judd — create a vibrant cultural tapestry that fuels both the humor and the stakes. Harbingers can be surprisingly reasonable, chaos goblins are mercifully rare, and the whole setting feels delightfully messy. It’s the kind of island life that might convince readers to start planning their magical retirement early.

This isn’t a traditional whodunit where readers race to unmask the villain ahead of the story. Instead, the mystery serves a larger purpose, hinting at deeper forces at work and laying groundwork for future books. The pacing stays sharp, the worldbuilding feels rich without overwhelming, and both Judd and Belinda’s arcs add unexpected emotional weight. And Gary? Gary’s a hero — full stop.

Readers looking for lively characters, magical mayhem, spunky seniors, and a heroine still figuring out her place in a chaotic world will find a lot to love here. It’s light, engaging, full of personality, and brimming with lore — a party atmosphere wrapped in a supernatural mystery with a strong retirement-with-a-view vibe.
