The Rise of Scarlett Heroux by Elizabeth Watson:
4 stars
The Rise of Scarlett Heroux introduces a compelling world that feels modern yet carries a distinct old-world sensibility, reflected in its architecture and lifestyle details. I especially enjoyed the boats, and the in-world terminology lends the setting a romantic, mystical quality. The characters are clearly drawn, with well-defined roles, and while the central plot twist is somewhat predictable, its execution is genuinely unexpected.
I would have loved to see a prologue showing Scarlett and Liam’s first meeting, and a bit more sharpening overall would have elevated the already solid worldbuilding. The dialogue and emotional beats could benefit from greater depth; the characters rarely need to wrestle with their emotions in order to function. Introducing more of that internal struggle would add a welcome layer of realism. The spice, however, hits a rare balance — it enhances the story without overwhelming it.
Elizabeth Watson’s pacing is excellent. The narrative structure is clean and free of filler, and on a technical level, the writing is polished and assured. I was able to fully settle into the world without distraction.
Rereading this, I realize that what I ultimately want is simply a little more of everything. The Rise of Scarlett Heroux is a thoroughly enjoyable, well-crafted debut that leaves me eager to return to this world.
