Makeovers on My Mind:
Sadly, this one isn’t mine.
By Thio Isobel Moss
If you’ve been hanging around here long enough, you probably know I’m a longtime HGTV fan. I’ve been watching for years—decades—and interior design has always had a hold on me. When Fixer Upper was at its peak, I was there. Now, Home Town is my obsession. I’ve even made the pilgrimage to the Silos in Waco and down to Laurel, Mississippi. Both trips were amazing!
I just watched the premiere of Rock the Block. The celebrity lineup threw me at first, but they all have design or artistic backgrounds, so it works. I tend to lean practical—form is fantastic, but it has to function—but I also love watching designers go all out. This first episode did not disappoint.
And now, naturally, I’ve got makeovers on my mind.
Several, in fact.
During my recent staycation, I painted my bedroom. Once this lingering bronchitis clears, I’ll be diving into a mural to finish it off. In the meantime, I’ve been enjoying something unexpected: space. My office used to live in my bedroom, and with most of that furniture moved out, the room feels completely different.
So different, in fact, that I’ve decided to move my office into the spare bedroom.
This will be a game-changer…eventually. For now, it means I’m working out of my living room while juggling two DIY projects at once.
Eek.
But wait—there’s more.
While all this has been going on, I’ve also noticed a few things on my website that aren’t quite behaving. Buttons overlapping, images drifting where they shouldn’t—nothing catastrophic, but enough to tell me it’s time for a refresh. I also want to improve The Moss Library. It’s about to expand, with The Weather Report (no, not about the weather) and a new corner dedicated to my dad.
Dad has been more than my editor—he’s also my go-to car guru. Despite being a Roadkill and Top Gear fan, my actual vehicle knowledge is…aspirational at best. I have my favorites (Piaggio Apes, Chevrolet Cameos), I’ve painted a few cars and motorcycles, and I even have a Honda CB400F project bike in the garage—her name is Ginger—but when it comes down to it, I rely on him.
A couple of months ago, while he was still going through radiation, I had an idea: what if he wrote a guest post about the vehicles in Blind Spot? Or better yet—his own blog? He is a natural storyteller in his own right, is infamous for humorous wordplay, and can provide insight into some Moss family traditions and games.
When I mentioned the idea, he lit up. He’s been turning over ideas ever since.
Now, he’s wrapping up his hormone treatment this week—and he’s cancer-free! He hasn’t settled on a name yet, but watch this space.
Between repainting rooms, reshaping my workspace, rebuilding parts of my website, and making room for something new with my dad…it seems like everything around me is getting a bit of a makeover.
It’s fun, exciting, and just a little intimidating—like I’m leveling up! What are some exciting changes happening in your life?
