My Review of This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me by Ilona Andrews:

By Thio Isobel Moss

Maggie, naked and alone, wakes to find herself in her favorite fictional world. It’s gritty and cruel, and the only currency she has is information. She knows this world inside and out—its people, its history, its future. But if she shares that knowledge, will it prevent atrocities…or ensure they happen?

It’s been a long wait, but Maggie is finally here. As expected, House Andrews delivers an expansive, immersive world full of magic, danger, and intrigue. The architecture, cultural evolution, and layered history of Rellas add remarkable depth, while the harsh realities—entitlement, brutality, and casual violence—cast a stark and memorable silhouette.

The characters are exquisitely crafted; the care behind them is evident on every page. That said, three things stood out to me.

First, there’s a noticeable echo of Burn for Me in some of the character dynamics. One line in particular—while not a direct quote—lands in a very similar moment with a similar thematic weight as a line from the Hidden Legacy series. I love both works, but once I noticed the parallel, it was hard to unsee.

Second, I expected one character to remain more morally gray. He begins that way, but quickly settles into the role of a solid ally. He’s still dangerous, ruthless, and unpredictable—but only toward his enemies.

Third, I was pulled out of the narrative once or twice by moments where information felt slightly awkward or not fully integrated. It was brief, but noticeable—and surprising, given how rare that is in an Ilona Andrews novel.

That said, the strengths of This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me easily eclipse its minor flaws. The plot is brilliantly inventive, and the narrative weaves darkness, honor, and compassion into a seamless whole. It shapes the reader’s emotions with precision—I’m still reeling.

I don’t know when Maggie’s next book will arrive, but the wait is going to be brutal. I’ll be coping by immediately starting a reread.

This novel is perfect for epic fantasy readers who crave deep immersion, a vivid and unforgiving world, political intrigue, and threads of romance. This is Ilona and Gordon at their most sophisticated.
